Breuer investigated the potential of colour to create space at an early point of time. From the mid-1960s onwards, his preoccupation with the depiction of three-dimensionality on a flat surface led to his working with sculptural reliefs that “are much closer to painting than sculpture, as the concerns upon which they are based are painterly rather than sculptural. Actually, they are paintings with physical structures. With the addition of further picture planes, they translate the principles of colour tectonics and the spatiality of colour into three-dimensionality, endowing these with particular intensity.” (Bernhard Holeczek, in: exhib. cat. Leo Breuer. Retrospektive, Wilhelm Hack Museum, Ludwigshafen/Bonner Kunstverein, 1992/93, p. 32).
