Serge Charchoune

Composition
1944

Oil on canvas, relined 21.3 x 33 cm Framed. Signed and dated 'Charchoune X 44' scratched into the wet paint with pencil lower right. - Small retouches to corners primarily.

Serge Charchoune grew up among landscapes characterised by woods and rivers close to the South Russian Samara. Sojourns in Barcelona, Berlin, Moscow, and Paris brought him into contact with Cubism, Constructivism, Dada, and Informalism. Over the years, this led him to achieve an experimentally characterised, highly individual design vocabulary.
Works such as the present painting bear witness to Charchounes' strong bond with the organic aspects of nature but also with the ringing rhythm of music. As a result of a complex dialogue with the world, his enigmatic compositions aim for a synaesthetic synergy of painting, language, and music.
