Antoine-Sébastien Falardeau

The Angel of the Annunciation after Carlo Dolci

Oil on canvas. 73 x 58 cm.

Verso inscribed on the canvas: "Angiolo del Annciatzione [sic!] / d'après Carlo Dolci au Palais Feroni / Le Chevalier Falardeau / Via de' Bardi 1325 / Florence, 1858 / Mme Florita / 6 Clarendon Place / London".
Antoine Sebastien Falardeau, later known as Le Chevalier Falardeau, trained as an artist in Quebec. He was sent by his master Robert Todd to study in Italy in 1846, and developed a growing reputation as a skilful copyist. His work was noticed in Florence by the Duke of Parma and from then he made incredible leaps in social rank. He married a niece of Pope Pius IX and bought a Florentine Renaissance palace where he received the Empress of Russia, royalty and the aristocracy who came to admire his works.
As remarkable as the story of his career, his life came to an abrupt and unfortunate end, when he was thrown of his horse during a morning ride.
The present work is a masterful copy after Carlo Dolci's Angelo Annunciante, in the Palazzo Spini Feroni.
