A pair of ice pails from the wedding service for Princess Louise of Prussia

Of cylindrical form with moulded base and rim and lion mascaron appliques with laurel wreaths in their jaws. The outer surfaces gilded throughout, a burnished gold band to the inner rim with tooled foliage. Decorated with finely painted views of Berlin in round reserves with palmette borders. The entire vase entwined with a colourful garland of naturalistic flowers and ivy. Blue sceptre mark, gilt painter's mark, incised III. H ca. 20, D ca. 18 cm.
1825.

The design of these bottle coolers, which are described in manufactory records as "Flaschennäpfe" or "Bouteillnäpfe", was first used for 20 pieces produced as part of a service for the Duke of Wellington which KPM began in 1817. The form was used again in 1825 in this service for the wedding of Princess Louise of Prussia. Here, the coolers are decorated with two well-known Prussian vedutas combined with naturalistically painted flower garlands to suit the occasion. This set of two ice pails is painted with one view of the royal palace of Charlottenburg seen from the street and one seen from the garden, as well as with the fishing lodge in Charlottenburg Palace gardens and the Belvedere in Charlottenburg Palace gardens. All views labelled in German and presumably painted by Hubert Anton Forst.
