Joan Miró

Sans Titre
1976

Colour chalk drawing on wove paper. Reverse side of the double-sided colour lithograph "Barcelona I" 32 x 23.3 cm Including the exhibition catalogue "Un camí compartit" of the Maeght Gallery, Barcelona 1975/76 with the double-sided colour lithographs "Barcelona II" and "Barcelona III". Signed and dated 'Miró 11/I/76' and dedicated 'à Madame Dierdorf avec mon affectueuse pensée' on the front of the catalogue. With texts by Pere Gimferrer, published by Galería Maeght, Barcelona 1975. - The paper of the drawing and lithographs minimally browned. Isolated minor foxing.

With apparently high speed and a dizzying application of line, Miró has conjured up a characteristic creature on this sheet of paper. While it is very small in stature, it is all the more alert and full of energy, and the bizarre “head-footer” looks at us curiously with its big round eyes. Regarding Miró's cosmos of figures, Werner Haftmann stated the following: “In the absurdity of this world of figures, the mythical streak that had always been present in Miró becomes clearer: creatures from beyond living comfortably in alien atmospheres, legendary animals of a mythical character and astronomical signs are the people who step out of the 'other' world of the coloured ground. The dreaming fantasy, listening in on the murmuring speech of the subconscious, independently spools out its own indescribably sensitive line like a thread, […] pricking up its ears in sudden amazement, it recognises a figuration and now defines it more precisely for itself, in this or that direction, as pointed out by association.” (Werner Haftmann, Malerei im 20. Jahrhundert I, Munich 1987, p. 348).
The drawing is dedicated to the Swiss collector Anne-Lise Dierdorf, who owned works including two very early landscape paintings by the great Catalan Surrealist from 1916 and 1917.
