An ivory okimono-type netsuke of the Three Monkeys, by Tomomasa. Late 19th century

Seated back to back in a circle and covering their eyes, mouths and ears with their paws, each one wearing a sleeveless jacket. The eye pupils of black glass. Signed Tomomasa in an oval cartouche reserved from the fur engraving.
Height 3 cm; width 3.7 cm

The subject of the sanpiki saru, the monkeys of seeing, hearing and saying no evil, originated in the decoration of the horse stable of Nikkô.
