An ivory netsuke of a fox dancer, by Ryômin. Second half 19th century

Wearing a tight-fitting costume with a limp tail and a mask tied to his head, the figure stands on one leg, the hands held as if they were paws. Signed Ryômin under the foot.
Height 4.8 cm

In some areas of Japan the kitsune odori was performed in mid-August at o-bon, the boys wearing white close-fitting costumes.
