A light boxwood netsuke of a stag, by Bishû. Around 1970

Standing with hooves placed together, head turned and lowered, the deer scratches its ear. The eyes double-inlaid in horn. Signed Bishû (in kanji) in a cartouche and Mishû (in hiragana) in a round cartouche, both reserved from the fine fur.
Height 4.3 cm

Saitô Bishû (born 1943 in Tokyo) was considered by Miriam Kinsey to be one of the best young carvers in 1977.
