A fine ivory okimono netsuke of Chôryô and Kôsekikô, by Hôshinsai, Second half 19th century

Chôryô, rising from the water on the back of a dragon and looking up to Kôsekikô who is crossing the river on the back of his horse, holding a scroll in his right hand. Inscribed Hôshinsai and seal Hôzan. Chipped.
Height 4.8 cm; width 4.0 cm

According to the legend, Kôsekikô rewards Chôryô for having rescued his shoe by handing him over his scroll. This scroll, the famous Tora no maki, made Chôryô a wise man both in military and political matters.
