An ebony wood netsuke of a toshiotoko at setsubun, by Gyokusen. Early 19th century
The toshiotoko, a male who was born in the corresponding upcoming animal year, with roasted beans on a sanbô in his left hand, throwing beans at three oni, toppling over at his feet. The man’s eye pupils inlaid. Signed Gyokusen with kaô on a slightly raised oval reserve.
