Julius Bissier

The self-taught artist Julius Bissier was introduced to East Asian art by the sinologist Ernst Grosse which had an ongoing impact on his work in a stylistic technical manner as well as in a spiritual respect. Besides landscape ink paintings in a Far Eastern technique, since the 1920s, Bissier also developed paintings in the style of New Objectivity. The friendship with Willi Baumeister and the encounter with Constantin Brancusi lead to an increasingly abstract, form-reduced style of painting since the 1930s which thematically concentrated on landscapes and later on still life.
