Ferdinand Hodler - biography

Ferdinand Hodler, the best-known Swiss painter of the 19th century, studied under Barthélemy Menn in Geneva, without being charged tuition fees, from 1873 to 1877. In his art he initially took his cue from painters such as Camille Corot and Gustave Courbet. Hodler's first successes came through various competitions in the 1880s, including the Concours Calame. He created his first Symbolist works in the mid-1880s.
