Jörg Immendorff started a degree in theatre design at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie in 1963, but soon transferred to Joseph Beuys's class. In 1969, his provocative political Fluxus performances led to his dismissal from the art academy. Immendorff's representational painting is characterised by its political-social-criticism content and the debate about the role of the painter. In stage-like picture spaces, emblematic motifs such as the monkey as alter ego of the artist appear. Whilst teaching at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie, Immendorff formed an alliance with the Dresden painter A. R. Penck. He also explored the division of Germany in the large-format series 'Café Deutschland' (1977-1983, Museum Ludwig Köln; Kunstmuseum Bonn). In 1989, he became Professor at the Frankfurt Städelschule and in 1996 at the Düsseldorf Kunstakademie. Alongside performances and canvas works, Immendorff has created wood and bronze sculptures, stage sets and opera costumes, for example for Richard Strauss' 'Elektra' in 1986 (Bremer Stadttheater), and in 1994 for 'The Rake's Progress' by Ivor Strawinsky (Salzburg Festival). His later work since 1999 has been dominated by a nervous disease (which leads to full paralysis), which he discusses in mysterious picture worlds. Immendorff has received numerous awards, including the Order of Merit of the Bundesrepublik Deutschland in 1998. He featured at documenta 5 and 7 in 1972 and 1982 respectively and at the Venice Biennale in 1976, 1980 and 1985. He has had solo exhibitions in, amongst others, New York, St. Petersburg, Beijing, Cologne and Paris.
