Henri Lebasque - biography

After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, under Léon Bonnat, Lebasque participated in exhibitions given by the Salon de la Société Nationale and the Salon des Indépendants. In 1903 he and his friend Henri Matisse founded the Salon d’Automne. His circle of friends also included Pierre Bonnard, Édouard Vuillard and Paul Signac. His initial style was Impressionist, under the influence of Georges Seurat and Camille Pissarro, but he eventually turned to Fauvism. His characteristic features were a liberal, large-scale application of paint, combined with delicate, soft colours. His luministic style was focused on creating lighting effects, and he predominantly painted idyllic landscapes – often in the south of France – as well as portraits and compositions of figures.
