Ulrich Mack - biography

Ulrich Mack was born in 1934 in Glasehausen/Eichsfeld, Thuringia, the sixth of nine children. Although Mack studied under Alfred Mahlau (painting) and Eberhard Troeger (photography) at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Hamburg between 1956 and 1962, he never saw himself as an artist, but as a craftsman; however, one can recognize his trained eye in his well-composed, formally reduced photographs. He had already published many of his artist portraits in newspapers during, and especially towards the end of his studies. For the photographs, he used remnants of the 35 mm film rolls of Kodak Tri-X film used by the film industry, where Mack worked. The result was extraordinary shots of intimate moments with his models, all of whom revealed a part of their individuality to him.
