Albert Marquet

At the Salon d’Automne of 1905, the art critic Louis Vauxcelles coined the term “les Fauves” at the sight of the bold colours of Marquet, Matisse, Derain and Vlaminck’s paintings. The experiences that Marquet gathered during his extended journey through Europe, Russia and Scandinavia in 1906 made an impression on the artist. In 1940 he moved to Algiers. Not until 1945, two years before his death, did he permanently return to Paris. He was particularly successful in the 1920s and became well-known in this period. His painting sets forth the tradition of Impressionism in a very distinctive way, combining subtle colouration and atmospheric quality with an objective, at times cool depiction.
