Raymond Pettibon

He uses these unusual combinations of American emblems to make ironical, provocative and socio-critical statements. Since the mid-1980s, he has also integrated newspaper cuttings into his drawings. Moreover, he has used collage techniques in several murals. Pettibon says that his sources of inspiration are not just comics and political cartoons but also artists such as William Blake, Francisco de Goya and Edward Hopper. He received a range of awards, including the Wolfgang Hahn Prize (2001) and the Bucksbaum Award at the Whitney Biennial (2004). In 2002, he took part in documenta 11 and in 2007 in the Venice Biennial. His works have been exhibited at well-known art galleries such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the MoMA in New York, the Tate Modern in London and Museum Ludwig in Cologne.
