John Rankin Wadell was born in Paisley near Glasgow in 1966. His father, a businessman, moved with his family to Yorkshire in 1976 where Rankin attended the Thirsk School. After further moves, he studied in St Albans at the Beaumont School, worked for a short time in a hospital, and studied administration at Brighton Polytechnic before recognising that his strengths and interests lay in the creative field. He studied photography at Barnfield College in Luton and the London College of Printing, but did not graduate. Despite this, he was known above all for his portrait photography in the 1990s, photographing a barely calculable number of famous personalities, including Queen Elizabeth II, Adele, Madonna, David Bowie, Kate Moss, Heidi Klum, Cate Blanchett, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kevin Spacey, Michael Jackson, Liam and Noel Gallagher, Kendall Jenner, Britney Spears, the Rolling Stones and many more great names.
Rankin published his pictures in significant magazines such as Vogue, Esquire, Rolling Stone and Elle, and they could be seen in the Museum of Modern Art in New York as well as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Probably best known worldwide are the major campaigns he created for brands such as Unilever, Rolls Royce, Samsonite and L’Oreal, which broke with all established conventions and visual habits and set sensational new trends that were embraced enthusiastically by young designers around the world. The focus was always on the narrative, the glamorous staging, the triumph of aesthetics. In addition to successful commercial campaigns, Rankin’s portfolio includes various charity projects: He photographed and designed for Women’s Aid, Amnesty International. Breast Cancer Awareness and sat on the jury for the Light Up the Darkness competition organised by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.
Rankin works not only as a photographer but also as publisher and film director. In 1991, he founded the monthly magazine Dazed and Confused with Jefferson Hack, and later also AnOther Magazine and AnOther Man, and has also published over 40 books. He has shot various documentary films and music videos for Kelis, Miley Cyrus and Rita Ora, and contributed visuals to the James Bond film Spectre (2015). Rankin was married to the English actress Kate Hardie (born 1968) from 1995 to 1998, and in 2009 married the Finnish actress Tuuli Shipster (born 1982). He supports the animal rescue charity Battersea in London and owns two dogs himself.
