Christian Schad - biography

Christian Schad is among the most important representatives of the New Objectivity in Germany. Educated at the Munich Academy of Art, he moved to Switzerland at the beginning of the First World War, where he temporarily joined in the Dada movement. Along with Cubism and Futurism, this inspired the paintings, graphic works and collages of his early work. A stay in Italy, where Schad came in contact with the work of Raphael and Ingres, would lead him to turn stylistically to the New Objectivity during the Berlin period of the 1930s.
