Christian Schad

Along with scenes of everyday life in the metropolis, it is the portrait that dominates here: in his elegant and often erotically charged images of different social classes, Schad captures the isolation of the individual with his photographically sharp, icy verism. Beginning in the 1940s, the artist lived in Aschaffenburg, where he completed a copy of Matthias Grünewald’s so-called “Stuppach Madonna”. The portraits, nudes and mythological paintings that he created after the war once more take up the style of Expressionism. Alongside his primary oeuvre as a painter, Schad experimented throughout his life with the technique of the photogram, to which he contributed a variation of his own, the so-called “Schadographie”.
