Weegee (Arthur Fellig) - biography

Arthur, who was actually named Usher, Fellig migrated with his family from Zloczow in Poland to New York City in 1910. He left home at 15 and got by on odd jobs until he was offered part time work at “ACME Newspictures”, where he became a freelance press photographer in 1935. He was famed for his spectacular shots of murder cases and fires and satisfied the press’s need for sensation thanks to his good connections to the police and his eye for good motifs. His shots for newspapers and magazines have shaped our view of both the glamorous and the dark side of New York’s night life in the 1940s and 50s.
