PORTRAIT OF THE ELECTOR MAXIMILIAN FRANZ OF COLOGNE

Oil on canvas. 68 x 55,5 cm.

Maximilian Franz von Habsburg, the youngest son of Empress Maria Theresia, was born in 1756 in Vienna and became, in 1780, the Grand Master of the German Order and in 1784 the Archbishop of Cologne and Bishop of Munster. In 1794 he fled from the French Revolutionary troops and died in 1801 in Vienna whilst in exhile. The painting depicts him wearing a black cassock with diamond studded pectorale and the emblem of the German Order.
