Carl von Blass went to the Academia in Venice in 1832. After his studies he went to Florence and Rome where he became influenced by Friedrich Overbeck. In 1851 he became the Professor of historical painting at the Academy in Vienna. His main works are the frescoes with the important scenes of the history of Austria in the Ruhmeshalle of "k.k Hofwaffenmuseums", which today is the Military History Museum in Vienna. He is the father of the painters Eugen and Julius von Blaas.

Carl von Blaas besuchte ab 1832 die Akademie in Venedig. Nach den Studienjahren hielt er sich in Florenz und Rom auf und wurde hier durch Friedrich Overbeck stark beeinflusst. 1851 folgte er einem Ruf als Professor für Historienmalerei an die Akademie in Wien. Sein Hauptwerk sind die Fresken mit den wichtigsten Szenen der Geschichte Österreichs in der Ruhmeshalle des "k.k Hofwaffenmuseums", dem heutigen Heeresgeschichtlichen Museum in Wien. Er ist der Vater der Maler Eugen und Julius von Blaas.
