Peeter Neeffs the Younger
THE INTERIOR OF THE ONZE LIEVE VROUWEKERK IN ANTWERP
Oil on copper, laid down on panel. 49.5 x 64.5 cm.
Signed on a pillar to the right: Peeter Neeffs.
Peeter Neeffs the Younger continued the tradition of the church interior in Antwerp as his father and artists like Hendrick van Steenwyck in the previous generation had already painted. His paintings show real and phantastic interiors of churches, the figural staffage were often painted by partly famous Antwerp artists like David Teniers the Younger and Frans Francken the Younger. The present painting shows the gothic cathedral of Antwerp, whose monumentality and vastness Neeffs captures in the painting. Obviously, the Antwerp cathedral was a popular motif that Neeffs often painted (cf. Mauritshuis, The Hague, no. 248).
