Mohn
1942

During the war years, Münter worked in great seclusion in her home in Murnau. Here, besides a few portraits in the style of folk-art, she mainly produced a series of delightful flower still lifes which she occasionally was able to sell or exchange for food. Between 1936 and 1945, her works were not exhibited.
This ensemble of poppies in full bloom, along with a few seed pods and some drooping leaves, has been set onto the white surface of the page delicately and with an airy lightness. Consciously minimalizing, Münter has deliberately refrained from adding the heavy black contours that occasionally appear in her work, without a structured background or the depiction of a vase. She has reduced her palette to a range of different, sometimes broken, red and green tones. The field poppy was one of the artist's favourite flowers: she was most probably inspired by its fluttering leaves and the concentrated power of its pods. In the 1950s, Münter continued to paint flower motifs on a white ground. In spite of the reminiscence of earlier creative periods and in spite of the motivic repetition, her late flower still lifes have an especially high degree of vitality.
