Bronze sculpture. Height 113 cm. Signed 'E. Wijnants' on back of cast-with plinth (7 x 38 x 33 cm). Probably posthumous cast. - With dark brown-greyish patina, with greenish oxidized areas.

The works of Ernest Wijnants, who studied at the Brussels Académie des Beaux-Arts, are abundantly represented in the museums of Belgium and Holland. In his sculptures, Wijnants assimilated a wide variety of influences - from Gothic panel painting to the Egyptian frieze. It is almost as though Georges de la Tour's female figures had fled into three-dimensionality, figures from cathedrals had shed their drapery and bounded out of their Gothic iconographic program, or the members of an Egyptian frieze had set themselves free. His sculptures thus are crystallizations of his personal, private interpretation of an art-historical cultural heritage.
