Pechstein's drawing, formulated with a steady hand, is to be understood as a thoroughly ambiguous portrait with its powerful lines and concentrated colouration in black and red. The sick girl, of whom Pechstein also made a large-format woodcut with the same title (Krüger H 211), seems to be dressed in an amazingly flirtatious way with collar and bow for convalescence in bed. Just as challenging is the theatrical pose and the gaze through narrow eyes, with which she addresses the viewer directly.
