Domínikos Theotokópoulos, called El Greco
PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN
Oil on canvas (relined). 108 x 86 cm.
In art historical publications since August Mayer this painting is frequently considered to be a work by El Greco. It is an unfinished painting in which the face is finely executed and the body only sketched (cf. Gudiol op. cit. p. 251). In addition to this, the poor condition also limits the impact. The composition, typology and physiognomy all fit the oeuvre of El Greco.
