WOODED LANDSCAPE WITH SHEPHERD

Oil on panel. 22 cm diameter.

Born in Brussels, Willem van den Bundel belonged to the group of painters who, in c. 1600, moved to the north of Holland. Here he was active in Amsterdam, Dordrecht, Rotterdam and finally Delft. His landscapes, due to the uniform and monochrome colour palette and fine, almost archaic brushwork, have an immediate impact. His oeuvre comprises of only a few signed works, including a 1623 "Wooded Landscape" in the Amsterdam Rijksmuseum (Walther Bernt: Die niederländischen Maler und Zeichner des 17. Jahrhunderts, Munich 1979, Fig 222).
