Portrait of a Youth
Oil on canvas (relined). 38 x 30.5 cm.
The swift, pastose and highly skilful brushwork displayed in this painting, especially in the depiction of the youth's collar, allow us to attribute this work to a Venetian artist of around 1600. It was sold as a product of Domenico Tintoretto by Ader Auctioneers in Paris in 2016. Although the attribution to Tintoretto can probably not be upheld, the bold modelling and steady hand of the artist indicate the work of a highly qualified master in their mature phase. Although the Fondation Bemberg in Toulouse ascribed this piece to the workshop of Tintoretto in their publication (Cros, 2000), both Sergio Marinelli's academic article (Marinelli, 2017), and Mattia Vinco's expertise (20th November 2017) attribute the work securely to Domenico Tintoretto's hand.
Mattia Vinco, 20.11.2017 (as Domenico Tintoretto).
