A partially stained ivory netsuke of Kadori Myôjin on a catfish. First half 19th century

Wearing only a fundoshi, Kadori Myojin lies on the “eartquake fish” trying to calm its movements by pressing down the namazu’s head with his hands, the man’s legs wide apart, the right foot resting on a gourd, laid to the side - apparently useless against the fishes movements. The namazu’s eyes of black horn.
