PIERRE JOSEPH PETIT

PANORAMIC RIVER LANDSCAPE WITH RESTING FIGURES

Oil on canvas. 37 x 54 cm.
P. J. Petit 1788.

P. J. Petit, who was probably born in Tournai, was a pupil of Christophe Hüet. He exhibited landscapes and architectural paintings at the Paris Salon from 1791 to 1819. A capriccio of ancient Roman architecture signed "Petit:f:Roma/febraio/1786" (Christie's, London, 3.4.1992, lot 1) proves that he stayed in Italy just two years before the present work was carried out.
