VIEW OF THE RADCLIFFE CAMERA IN OXFORD

Oil on card. 20.5 x 15 cm.
J. Allan.

Named after its donor Dr. John Radcliffe, the Radcliffe Camera was built between 1737 to 1749 for use as a library. With its characteristic round form, the building soon became one of the university city's landmarks, and now houses a lecture hall. Not much is known about the painter of this small veduta. Eight views of the Thames by the same artist, also painted on card, were auctioned by Christie's, South Kensington in 2005, as well as a view of Windsor Castle in 2010.
