Jan Thomas van Yperen

THE VIRGIN WITH CHILD, THE INFANT JOHN THE BAPTIST AND PUTTI

Oil on canvas (relined). 112 x 137.5 cm.

Jan Thomas van Yperen became a master in the Antwerp guild of St. Luke in 1639/40. Prior to this he probably worked in the studio of Peter Paul Rubens, where he edited and copied paintings by the master in his house following his death in 1640. Jan Thomas moved to Vienna around 1656/58, where he worked for Emperor Leopold I and Arch Duke Leopold Wilhelm. Alongside large scale religious history paintings, of which the present work forms a fine example, Jan Thomas also painted landscapes with mythological or pastoral figures. His close relationship to the work of Rubens was typical of his oeuvre.
