Jacob Philipp Hackert

THE PORT OF LIVORNO

Oil on canvas (relined). 37.5 x 60 cm.
Ph Hackert pinx. 1778 Port de Livourne.

The following veduta depicts Porto Medico, the newer of the two harbours at Livorno, which was built as an extension of the older Darsena Vecchia in 1572. The tall tower of the Fortezza Vecchia marks the entrance to the older harbour in the centre of the image to the right. The octagonal, white marble Torre del Marzocco extends out of the water to the left, and the foreground of the painting is occupied by several figures, including oriental merchants.
This work is the second view in a series of depictions of the harbour of Livorno made by the artist when he visited Florence whilst travelling back to Rome from Switzerland. The entire series of works was originally displayed in the chambers of Tsarina Maria Feodorowna in Pavlovsk castle. After the four paintings, Hackert also carried out a series of etchings which he dedicated to the Grand Duke of Tuscany Peter Leopold, who was later Emperor Leopold II, as thanks for which the Grand Duke presented the artist a diamond ring with his portrait.
