Tilman Riemenschneider, circle of

AN EARLY 16TH CENTURY WOOD FIGURE OF THE VIRGIN WITH CHILD FROM THE CIRCLE OF TILMAN RIEMENSCHNEID

Probably limewood, slight remains of polychromy, circle of Tilman Riemenschneid, c. 1500/1510
The right hand of the Virgin probably added. Minor wear. Height 123 cm.

An early 16th century wood figure of the Virgin with Child from the circle of Tilman Riemenschneider, the reverse flattened and hollowed out, slight remains of an older polychromy. The Virgin depicted standing on a crescent moon, holding the nude Child, His hand aloft in a blessing, in Her left hand over Her hip. The figure is designed for a frontal viewpoint and stands with the head tilted to one side in an elegant contrapposto, which is emphasized by the folds of the Virgin's gown. The high quality of the carving is particularly evident in the faces, hair and the drapery of Mary's garment, and speaks for a date of around 1500/1510.
We would like to thank Dr. Frank Matthias Kamme, Nuremberg, for his kind help in cataloguing this work.
