In the monograph published on occasion of the exhibition of Oswald Achenbach's works at Lempertz, Mechthild Potthoff wrote of this painting: "Contrasting warm and cold light sources and emphasis on the play of light and shadow were favourite motifs of Achenbach. The soft reflexes of one light source, scattered playfully over the figures, is contrasted with a stark silhouette created by the light from behind." (op. cit., p. 278).
