Following his relocation to New York in 1936, T. Lux Feininger, who had in the meantime turned to painting, reverted back to photography. In addition to the visual attractions of the metropolis, he was interested in experimenting with camera techniques: Using opera glasses and military binoculars, which he fixed in front of the lens, he changed focal lengths and image details and thus achieved artistic alienation effects such as blurring and distortion. His brother Andreas Feininger later mentioned these procedures in his textbook 'Advanced Photography. Methods and Conclusions' (New York 1952, pp. 71ff.).
