Still Life with Fruit, Nuts, and a Glass of Wine

Oil on canvas (relined). 28 x 35.5 cm.

Emilie Preyer was among the most unusual artists of the Düsseldorf School. She was one of the few female artists to study at the Düsseldorf Academy, and went on to enjoy a successful international career as a painter of still lifes. The fact that her father Johann Wilhelm Preyer was one of the leading still life painters in Düsseldorf surely encouraged her choice of career, but her precocious talent gained her a place at the Düsseldorf Academy. She took courses with the narrative painter Heinrich Mücke and the landscape artist Hans Frederik Gude, but later specialised in still lifes.
Her works achieved international renown and were exhibited throughout Europe and the United States, where the works of the Düsseldorf School found numerous admirers. Emilie Preyer's works are influenced by those of her father in both style and choice of motifs. This is particularly evident in the present work's clarity of forms, detailed depiction of surface textures, and naturalistic rendering of optical effects such as the reflection in the glass.
