The Adoration of the Magi

Oil on copper. 27.5 x 20.5 cm.

This composition is based on a copperplate engraving by Johannes and Raphael Sadeler from the series "Virtute Jesu Christi Fillii Dei Vivi", published in 1588. The work is a successful contemporary rendition of the “Adoration of the Magi“ from this series. The South German author of this work, possibly active in Munich or Augsburg, has added to it several of his own motifs, such as the dove on the roof of the stable, the canopy above the archer, the pearls embroidered onto Bathasar's robes, and the flowers in the foreground.
We are grateful to Dr Thomas Fusenig for his assistance in cataloguing this painting.
