London, marks of Gilbert Marks, dated 1900.

Gilbert Marks (1861-1905) was considered by his contemporaries to be one of the most talented goldsmiths of his generation. After participating in several popular exhibitions in the 1890s, his name started to crop up in publications such as "The Art Journal", "The Magazine of Art", and "The Studio" which, even in the midst of the Industrial Revolution, celebrated simple forms and signs of artisanal craftsmanship. Marks favored chased plant and animal motifs to decorate his dishes, candlesticks, and plaques. Due to the artist's early death, his works rarely appear on the market today.

Provenance

South German private collection.
