Wilhelm Steuerwaldt

Landscape with a Frozen River

Oil on panel. 30 x 40 cm.
Monogrammed and dated lower left: WST (ligatured) 1867.

Signed to the reverse of the panel by a later hand: "Parti bei Quedlinburg an der Altenburg".

Wilhelm Steuerwaldt was originally a pupil of Carl Hasenpflug, and shared this artist's penchant for depicting snowy crossroads and gateways. He studied in the landscape class of the Düsseldorf Academy under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer from 1833 to 1836, before returning to his hometown of Quedlinburg. Steuerwaldt mainly concerned himself with the landscape and architectural forms of Quedlinburg and its surroundings, of which the present winter scene is a charming example.
