Portrait of Cardinal Decio Azzolino

Oil on canvas. 119 x 96.5 cm.

After a painting of the same size by the Flemish portrait artist Ferdinand Voet in the Staatlichen Museen zu Berlin (inv. nr. 413).
Decio Azzolino (1623-1689) was a member of an old aristocratic family which had previously brought forth several other church officials. He became secretary of the sacred college in 1653 and was appointed a cardinal in 1654. Decio Azzolino rose to fame as confident of the former Swedish Queen Christine, who lived in Rome since 1655 following her abdication and conversion to Catholicism. Christina appointed the Cardinal, with whom she was rumoured to have had an affair, as her sole heir. Although Decio Azzolino was able to prepare the burial ceremony for Christina in Saint Peter's Basilica, he too died seven weeks after the Queen's passing.
