Hans Herrmann

The Dutch Bleaching Green

Oil on canvas. 67.5 x 92.5 cm.
Signed lower right: Hans Herrmann.

Hans Herrmann studied at the art academy in his home town of Berlin, and at the Düsseldorf Academy under Eugen Dücker from 1880 to 1883. He ran his own studio in Düsseldorf from 1883 onwards, before moving back to Berlin in 1886.
This artist's oeuvre, which is generally described using the term "impressionist naturalism", consists mainly of depictions of Dutch landscapes and city vedutas, characterised by their realistic rendering of light and light reflections. Alongside the uncommon motif, these playful contrasts of light and shadow are what lend this painting its charm. The motif of washing being dried on a lawn was also used by Max Liebermann in a painting of 1882/83 (Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, Cologne); both artists were among the founding members of the Berlin artist group "Die Elf".
