South German late 18th century

A South German house altar with the Assumption of the Virgin, late 18th century

Carved wood with presumably original polychromy; the paintings oil on panel. The central compartment of this house altar depicts the Assumption of the Virgin with a figure of God the Father and the dove of the Holy Spirit. The architectural framework encorporates figures of Saint Joseph, a further saint, and two angels. The painting on the predella shows three angels with an inscribed cartouche dated 1793 flanked by two further angels, Saint James, and a crowned saint with a sword.
One wing of the upper left angel and one of Saint James' fingers lost, the staff and sword loosely attached. Minimal wear. 103 x 51 x 16.5 cm.

Provenance

All proceeds from the sale of this work will be donated to the Cardinal Meisner Foundation, Cologne.
