Abel-Truchet's preferred motif was city views, predominantly of Paris and Venice, inspired by the Impressionists. In this work, the movement of the waves and the reflections of the sun on the water of the Grand Canal play the principal role. The painter dedicated this work to the French author Charles-Henry Hirsch (1870-1948).
