Jan Anthonisz. van Ravesteyn

Portrait of Lucretia van der Meulen

Oil on panel. 89.9 x 71.1 cm.
Signed and dated upper right: LUCRETIA/ ...R.MEULEN/JRAVESTIJN (JR ligatured). Above this: LUCRETIA VAN DER/MEUELEN/ A° M.DCXXXIX.

Judging by her clothing, jewellery and posture, the sitter of this half-length portrait was a wealthy patrician, probably from the Hague. Her husband, David de Ruyter, also sat for a portrait by Ravensteyn in 1639. The portrait is now kept in the Academy of Arts Honolulu in Hawaii. In relation to this portrait, Ursula Härting mentioned that the bonnet with the fold over the forehead used in this work was also painted by Rembrandt in the same year in the portrait of Alijdt Adriaensdr (Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam).

Certificate

U. Härting 20.2.2002.
