Johann Alexander Thiele

Coastal Landscape with a Jetty

Oil on canvas. 35.5 x 52 cm.
Signed lower right: AThiele inv..

Although the landscape painter Alexander Thiele was active in other areas of Germany, his work is closely linked to Dresden. Thiele came to this city between 1715 and 1717 and began working for Augustus the Strong within a year of his arrival. He later became court painter for Augustus' son and heir Augustus III. Thiele's paintings are considered the most beautiful views of Saxony ever painted, and sooner or later all visitors to the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden meet with his panoramic landscapes with the city in the distance and his sylvan views of Saxon Switzerland. This image however does not show any specific location, and is instead an early fantasy landscape comparable to the works numbered 95/04 and 95/05 in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden.
We would like to thank Dr. Harald Marx in Dresden for his kind support in cataloguing this work.
