Caroline Friederike Friedrich was born into a family that had been active as painters throughout four generations. In her day she was the only woman to teach at the Academy in Dresden and received a pension from this establishment as of 1774. Her princely patrons included members of the House of Anhalt-Dessau. During her lifetime she was often compared to the Netherlandish still life painter Jan van Huysum.
