Probably Maasland 2nd half 13th century

A figure of the Virgin enthroned, probably Maasland, second half 13th century

Wood, carved three-quarters in the round, the reverse flattened. Remains of older polychromy. The crowned and enthroned Virgin is depicted in a rigid and frontal aspect, holding the clothed and correspondingly crowned Child on her lap. The simple robes of the figures fall in generous folds down to their feet, emphasising the sacred quality of the sculpture.
Both right hands lost. A vertical crack to the head of the Virgin and a larger crack to the front of the plinth. The reverse with losses due to woodworm. Height 49 cm.

Provenance

Private ownership, South Germany (since 1931).
