Fritz Koenig

Kleine Biga
2003

Bronze with golden brown patina. 19 x 6.5 x 6.5 cm. Monogrammed 'FK' (scratched). - Uneven patina on integral plinth.

At the beginning of the 1950s, the pictorial forms in his work gained in depth in comparison to his pictorial narrative. Koenig formulates the type of 'mass sculpture', which opens up to him a form of representation with abstract tendencies and, for example, combines herds of horses, which the artist observes in the Camargue, to form an incredibly dynamically moving body. In Rome, Koenig discovered another theme with the ancient Quadriga team of horses, which, in his hands, became one of the characteristic signs of his pictorial language. Large Quadriga, Poseidon and also 'Kleine Biga' embody the incredibly powerful tension, the rearing up in the moment of the expected explosive forward movement.
